Tutorial seven: Assistive Technology!

Assistive technology: is a generic term that includes assistive, adaptive, and rehabilitative devices for people with disabilities and includes the process used in selecting, locating, and using them.

AT promotes greater independence by enabling people to perform tasks that they were formerly unable to accomplish, or had great difficulty accomplishing, by providing enhancements to or changed methods of interacting with the technology needed to accomplish such tasks. TALIKING PHOTO ALBUM:
Talking photo albums allow you to add a ten second voice recording to each photo in the album.
The talking photo album is great for those with cognitive and memory impairments. The voice recording can be information about the photo therefore memories can be rekindled if a person is unable to regenerate them themselves. With the talking photo album, memories are never lost!!

A few ideas for using a talking photo album:
As a conversation starter: Insert photos of the individual engaged in various activities with relevant messages recorded (e.g., activities done at home over the weekend)
As a conversation starter: Insert photos of preferred or favorite activities that can provide a basis for a conversation
To share information about what happened at school: Insert digital photos and messages about school activities
To provide directions for completing a task: Insert photos representing the sequence in which the activity is to be completed; a verbal instruction or cue can be recorded for each photo

Tut six:The Internet and Online Communities: FACEBOOK!!

Facebook gives people the power to share and make the world more open to connect.

This site is very interactive. People can create their own profile to keep in touch with their friends all over the world. Photos and videos can be uploaded and posted on a profile for friends and family to view.

People choose to contribute to facebook because it is an easy and affordable way to reconnect with friends and family.

An ethical issue that arises with facebook is the fact that personal information submitted by a facebook user can be viewed by many, often not only friends.

Poeple all around the world can communicate with family and friends in different countries by using something as simple as the internet.

Facebook cannot provide face to face interaction as other sites eg: skype do.

Blogger is a blog storage service that allows private or multi-user blogs with time-stamped entries. It was created by Pyra Labs, which was bought by Google in 2003. The service itself is located at www.blogger.com. (cited Wikipedia 2010).

  • Blog Themes
  • Gadgets
  • Share Thoughts
  • Blogger also Develops a community within users.

Tut Two: Digital camera use and applications

Tut two: Digital imaging
A new technology is really superior to an old one in every feature. Briefly discuss this statement in relation to digital camera technology, what would you consider to be some of the pluses and minisus digital camera technology holds in relation to more traditional film based camera's.
Digital camera's allow more control/management eg: instant viewing of a shot. We are less likely to print photos nowadays as they are so readily available therefore photos are not treasured so much.

List some of the ways that digital images can be stored, transferred and manipulated using other communication technology.
Cell phones, computer, CCTV (security camera's).

Given the prevalence of image capturing devices and thinking about the issues disscussed in tut one, consider what sirt of ethical issues may arise with their use.
Unwanted photos of an individual being exposed to the public eg:Facebook. This invades personal space.
